Teacher Truth: Centering Data Informed Solutions
Black Teacher Project Data
Pittsburg Unified School District invited our strategic partners, Black Teacher Project (BTP), to participate in an engagement focused on helping leaders better understand the underlying issues contributing to challenges in retaining Black teachers. BTP utilized data gathered from listening sessions to gain insights into the experiences of PUSD’s Black staff. They then used their learnings to inform recommendations for the superintendent and to develop learning sessions for Black educators in PUSD.
Learning Policy Institute
As part of our partnership with the National Coalition on Education Equity, we attended one of the Learning Policy Institute’s Brown at 70 webinar sessions entitled The Importance and Scarcity of Black Teachers. We encountered a lot of information that confirmed our findings:
A growing body of research indicates that Black teachers have a positive impact on the academic and social outcomes of Black students, students of color, White students, and even White teachers.
The number of Black teachers continues to decrease, creating challenges for equity and representation in education.
To tackle this issue, education policies and practices that can effectively recruit, develop, and retain Black teachers must be intentional and prioritized.
