Staying Connected: Fall 2021

The Power of Black Educators

STAYING CONNECTED, October 2021

As a storytelling project, we understand that we’re part of a tradition our ancestors have sustained for generations. Our Teacher Truth project carries forward a long legacy of leveraging data and storytelling to improve educational experiences for Black people.

While studying at Howard University in the 1930s, Dr. Mamie Phipps Clark--creator of the well-known “doll tests”--focused her research on the racial self-perception and identity of Black children in different types of school settings. She not only looked at integration or segregation of student and teacher populations, but also at the impact of having a Black teacher versus not having a Black teacher in the classroom. Her work affirmed the positive impact of Black educators, illuminated systemic inequities related to segregation, and played a role in the landmark passing of Brown v. Board of Education in 1954.

We’re continuing to reflect on the powerful experience of our first Teacher Truth event, Teacher Truth Perspectives: Watch Party and Collection Release. We’re grateful to the diverse group of attendees who joined us, and of course to our brilliant educator interviewees and everyone who responded to the Teacher Truth survey.

If you couldn’t join us, don’t worry! You can find the event recording, blogs illuminating the data we’ve collected so far, the video interviews we previewed at the watch party, and more on the Teacher Truth website.

If you’d like to host a Teacher Truth screening in your community, please contact info@blackfemaleproject.org today!

“I feel seen, and I have hope that I can be a part of the positive change that needs to happen.”
- Desiré Whitmore, science educator at The Exploratorium, San Francisco

The quote above speaks to the powerful impact of our annual collaboration with our partners at The Black Teacher Project. For the sixth year in a row, we hosted an observed conversation among Black educators in order to provide opportunities for reflection, connection, learning, and healing.

On the heels of this successful and inspiring annual engagement, we’re already anticipating next year’s! Mark your calendars now for Wednesday, March 16, 2022, for what’s sure to be another engaging and illuminating Teacher Truth experience.

MORE INFO AND REGISTRATION
BlackFemaleProject would like to express our gratitude to Olivia Yarbrough, project manager at Black Teacher Project. Black Teacher Project is our key strategic partner in the implementation of Teacher Truth, our first industry-specific collection. Teacher Truth is a complex project with many moving parts and a high level of detail involved with each. Thanks to Olivia’s grace and expertise, we’ve been able to accomplish in-depth, collaborative results. As we celebrate the success of our 6th Annual Conversation with Black Teacher Project in honor of Women’s History Month—and look toward the 7th Annual Conversation—we take this moment to acknowledge and thank Olivia.

For as long as human civilization has been documented, Black women have been significant and consistent contributors to culture and collective well-being, yet Black women continue to receive only a fraction of the financial support that is available.

BlackFemaleProject relies on community members like you to help interrupt these systemic inequities and allow us to share more stories and research in support of #BlackWomenAtWork.

CLOSE THE GAP. DONATE TODAY.
