Staying Connected: Summer 2021

Mental Health & Wellness

STAYING CONNECTED, July 2021

At its core, BlackFemaleProject is about supporting Black women to be well. Storytelling supports the mental wellness of the storyteller as well as that of the people who feel reflected in the story being told.

Jacki McKinney, MSW, is an accomplished and celebrated family advocate and organizer. Her experiences as a survivor of houselessness, addiction, and the criminal and psychiatric systems inform her practices.

As a participant, volunteer, staff person, and supporter, Jasmine Brown has supported BlackFemaleProject from all imaginable angles. Her insights and careful analysis through her artistic and organizational lens have enriched our work, and we have been fortunate enough along the way to witness her journey toward walking in her purpose. As Jasmine expands her creative and professional footprint, we extend our deepest gratitude for her contributions to date and look forward to her continued commitment to her own well-being and the international work of BlackFemaleProject.

In Black Womenomics (recently published by Goldman Sachs and shared on our LinkedIn page), researchers make the case for investing in Black women entrepreneurs, citing the following:

  • Access to funds and investment is a major barrier to successfully opening a business. Black business owners are 20% less likely to fund their startups with bank business loans.

  • More than 3/4 of Black and Latinx women business founders cite limited access to funds or investment as a barrier to success.
