BECAUSE OF A BLACK WOMAN Precious J. Stroud

We’ve been acknowledging our 10-year anniversary with the theme, Because of a Black Woman, celebrating Black women who’ve inspired us from afar and those who've invested their time and talents to support our growth. And since BlackFemaleProject exists because of one particular Black woman, Precious J. Stroud, we’re sharing a very special reflection about the impact she’s had on those of us who have the honor of working alongside her

We asked our team: “What's one of the most memorable lessons or practices Precious has taught you? How do you continue to apply it in your personal and/or professional life?” Read our responses below…

Afiya Williams
Programs Manager, BlackFemaleProject

Through her actions, Precious has taught me how to think about and develop a company that is led by values and committed to disrupting the traditional ways of being an entrepreneur. As a new founder, I am constantly watching and expanding my ways of being through the lens of BlackFemaleProject. When I am struggling with the tensions of capitalism and soul work, Precious’s example reminds me that another way is possible and we're already doing it.

Communications Manager, BlackFemaleProject
Consultant, PJS Consultants

Precious taught me—and continues to exemplify—the importance of active listening. From the moment you meet her, she isn’t just listening; she makes space for everyone to share their experiences and she welcomes and values all perspectives. In doing so, she builds incredible teams that are valued, seen, and heard, and she does this all while serving as an example of leading with integrity and care.

Writer and Editor,
BlackFemaleProject and PJS Consultants

Precious has shown me the power of trust in a professional relationship. When we met, I had no pre-existing writing career or track record. But she saw my capacity and my work ethic, and trusted me enough to not only invite me into her own work, but also to position me as a reliable writer for clients and to refer me out for other opportunities. The trust she placed in me allowed me to gain confidence in my own abilities and also had a huge impact on my life in that it positioned me to shift the way I approach my career, stepping into a more free and fulfilling lifestyle. This is something I carry with me and try to pay forward to other younger Black women navigating their career paths.

E’rika Chambers
Director of Programs, BlackFemaleProject

Precious taught me how to slow down and pivot when needed to ensure the highest quality in our programs and engagement. She taught me how to take the time to educate, reflect, and respond to tasks and responsibilities with care and intention. Precious’s guidance has impacted both my career and personal life. She offered me the opportunity to put my research praxis into practice, which has also impacted my personal life on so many levels. I appreciate Precious for recognizing, celebrating, and mentoring my genius.

Kia Walton
PJS Consultants Restoring Humanity in Marketing Fellow;
Teacher Truth Interviewee

Precious models for me how to lead with one's values at the forefront. She treated Teacher Truth interviewees with incredible care, thoughtfulness, and respect, making for one of the most affirming experiences I ever had as a teacher. One of the most important times in my life is crystallized because of the efforts of Precious and the team she magnetically draws in—to listen deeply and hold space for truth in all its complexity, tenderness, and triumph. As a Fellow in the Restoring Humanity in Marketing Fellowship, I see her commitment to her values from a different vantage point. Hilarious and heartfelt, reflective and insightful, possessing so much knowledge and expertise yet always in partnership as a learner. When someone held in such high esteem engages on such a human level, it collapses that distance of positionality and widens channels of connection. I am so touched by her commitment to her values, and I experience them in my mind, body, and spirit. I’m very grateful for the opportunity to learn from such an admirable leader and human.

Kristen Marlene
Founder of Carefree Kris Creative;
Design Consultant, BlackFemaleProject and PJS Consultants

A practice that I observe of Precious' is always introducing and connecting people with each other in an authentic way. She makes a point to say your name, what you do, and shares something that may connect the parties meeting. She does this in person, via email, at an event, at a parade, at a booth, at a dinner—literally anywhere and anytime. Some may think she recalls by keeping note of all these connections, people, and organizations in her mind, but I am convinced she is keeping us all in her heart. WOW! That's amazing and inspiring.

Laura Martinez
Director, Business Operations & Client Relations, PJS Consultants

Precious imparted the invaluable lesson of fearlessness and self-belief. Witnessing her leap of faith and unwavering confidence in her abilities left a lasting impression on me. Whenever faced with challenges or daunting tasks, I remind myself that I possess the necessary tools within to thrive, drawing strength from my experiences. This mindset continues to guide me both personally and professionally, empowering me to bet on myself and confront obstacles head-on.
