Keeping the Vision Alive — Reflections from the New Year Visioning Workshop
It’s already a wrap on January–can you believe it? Last month, I had the pleasure of hosting my second vision board workshop for our BlackFemaleProject community. I am grateful for those that joined me for sharing an incredible time of reflection, inspiration, and intention.
I love leading this workshop. Our vision boards act as roadmaps and are powerful tools for achieving our intentions and goals. It’s difficult to reach a destination without knowing where you’re headed. Setting goals helps to create a starting point, a destination, and sometimes, goal posts along the way. Don’t worry or hold too tight to the particular steps of your journey. Though the way to get there may not be exactly as you imagined, activating your vision board—and yourself—will bring you what you need.
If you were unable to join my session (or just want a refresh of the magic), here are a few insights about my connection to vision boards and tips to activate the magic in yours:
My introduction to vision boarding or manifesting
I remember enjoying making collages with magazines and construction paper as a kid, but they didn’t have a purpose beyond crafting. It was after I’d graduated college and was ready for a big life change that I made my first board with the purpose of manifesting my desires.
The impact my vision boarding practice has had on me
I’d had no “training” on how to make an effective board. It was very simple, not at all artistic, and had specific desires placed on it. The whole board came true! That was all I needed to make it a regular practice and to reverse learn why it was so effective and powerful. That was 2012 and my boards continue to be sources of magic in my life all these years later. And they look much more creative and exciting.
Why I chose to host this workshop for BlackFemaleProject
I want Black women to live out their wildest dreams, even if those dreams don’t feel huge. As a Black woman founder with a radical wellbeing company, I believe in the mission of BlackFemaleProject and share the vision of Black women thriving as our authentic selves.
What should anyone that wants to make a vision board keep in mind?
Here are the five things I encourage people to think about when creating and activating their boards:
When calling in your visions and dreams, start with gratitude. We have to be grateful for what we already have before we ask for more.
Throw out the word “failure” and redefine what success looks like for you. Understand that you cannot fail, only learn and expand. (I have to remind myself often of this one. It’s a practice in compassion.)
Identify 4-6 values and then reflect on your dreams through the lens of those values and ask yourself, do they align?
Put your vision board somewhere that you can see it on a daily basis (like your phone or computer background). Each day, select an area or item on your board to focus on and then spend 1 minute imagining it becoming a reality. See it, smell it, taste it, feel it.
Take action. Create simple, actionable intentions (read: goals) that bring your vision to life.
Remember to dream big—it’s free!
Go Wild,
Fi.
