Event Reflections: The State of Black Women AT WORK
“I look at the notion of refusal through that lens—refusal so that when you refuse, you restore, you recover yourself. You recover elements of your humanity. How people treat you is a reflection of them, and their behavior is a reflection of whether or not they have access and connection to their humanity. But how we respond is where ours lies.” - Dr. Wendi Williams
One year after the release of her book, Black Women at Work: On Refusal and Recovery, Dr. Wendi Williams joined BlackFemaleProject for a conversation about her writing process, new learnings, connecting to our ancestral recovery practices, and the simple yet powerful ways we can continue to refuse for the sake of our health.
We were curious to know what Dr. Wendi has learned; what her learnings have confirmed; and how her research—focused on Black women and girls—continues to evolve. Women from across the country participated in the intentionally intimate conversation, made up of a small group of 10 to allow everyone sufficient space to share, reflect, and connect. We left feeling seen, inspired, and prepared to lean into our own boundary-affirming healing journeys.
Many thanks to Dr. Wendi.
