Staying Connected: Early Spring 2021

Staying Connected, March 2021

STAYING CONNECTED, March 2021

Having transitioned from Black History Month to Women's History Month, we at BlackFemaleProject are continuing our journey of lifting up Black Women's Herstories every month.

BlackFemaleProject is following in the footsteps of so many Black woman leaders who came before us. The words of radical educator Septima Poinsette Clark resonate with our priority of inquiring and listening to people in order to learn.

BlackFemaleProject Member Spotlights are one way that we celebrate Black women who help to sustain our work and introduce them to the wider BlackFemaleProject community. This month, hear from Brittney Watters, a fearless educator whose focus in Fresno Unified School District is changing the culture by positive, equitable, and inclusive storytelling.

Two Sessions Remaining:

MARCH 25, 10:00am to 11:30am PDT
APRIL 29, 10:00am to 11:30am PDT

BlackFemaleProject is partnering with Alliance for Girls to deliver a critical workshop series: Voices Rise: Black Women in Leadership, exploring the following questions:

  • How can we use lessons learned from intersectional lived experiences and center the voices of those who navigate complex social structures to teach us how to lead with love, and empathize with those who represent difference in our lives?

  • How can we use our voices to counter pervasive racism and sexism in schools, outside of school, in the workplace, and beyond?

What inspires you?
What brings you joy?
How do you cope with loss?

Just before shelter-in-place orders went into place in the Bay Area in March of 2020, BlackFemaleProject came together—for the fifth year in a row—with our dear partners in the work, Black Teacher Project. We are grateful to grow and learn alongside another Black woman-founded and led organization.

In September of 2020, BlackFemaleProject was selected to present at the ASCEND:BLO Network Summit, Black Resilience: Building Power in the Bay. This invitation gave us the chance to share the learnings from our inaugural impact report, Reflections 2020: Our First Five Years.

We have so much to be grateful for!

This month, we want to shine a light on a generous and successful partnership with Farley’s Coffee in Oakland. As their inaugural Give Back program nonprofit partner, we received funds to support Teacher Truth, A BlackFemaleProject Production. Farley’s sold out of our carefully curated Give Back Box, which included three powerful novels by Black woman authors: Americanah by Chimamanda AdichieHomegoing by Yaa Gyasi; and Red at the Bone by Jacqueline Woodson.

We thank Farley’s for their investment in BlackFemaleProject and commend their commitment to community!

UJIMA: PARTNER NEWS
Highlighting the work of our like-minded friends in the community

Our friends at theboardiQ Hall of Fame are aiming to move the needle in recognizing and shining the spotlight on the best executive talent, helping to raise awareness and increase representation of African American / Black people for board and executive roles in corporate America. For as long as human civilization has been documented, Black women have been significant and consistent contributors to culture and collective well-being, yet Black women continue to receive only a fraction of the financial support that other demographic groups receive.

This gap in financial support is widespread beyond the venture capital world as well. BlackFemaleProject relies on our community to help interrupt these systemic inequities and allow us to share more stories and research in support of #BlackWomenAtWork.
